We live our lives like time is standing still. As if we aren’t changing, this is how it is, and it has always been that way. You don’t hear people talk about evolving in real time or what the next evolution might look like even if they believe in evolution over creationism. Let me tell you that evolution is near real-time observable. Think about recorded human history. It’s only 4000 years long. That means that we didn’t have them means to document and store information consistently before that. So much has changed in 4000 years considering our species has been around roughly 160,000 years. Consider the human lifespan can be 100 years long, that means our recorded history is only 40 stacked human lifespans. Or if generations are roughly 25 years (average birthing age) that means you are only 160 generations removed from 2000 BCE! I don’t know about you but that blows my mind. We’ve just gotten started. And so much has changed in our own lifetimes. If you are lucky enough to have met one of your great grandparents and you’re lucky enough to meet one of your great grandchildren, you will have spanned 7 generations including your own. That’s 175-200 years, nearly 5% of all of recorded history!
There are several take-aways here. We are in our adolescence as a species. We are quickly learning and growing. We have seen war and land grabs and I am hopeful we have learned from that. Here is my suggestion for where we go from here: 1. Learn human history. There really isn’t that much history to learn considering how briefly we’ve been recording history. 2. Understand that we are changing fast. Think about what life was like at the start of your parent’s or grandparent’s lifetime and compare it to where we are today. 3. Realize that human evolution is only speeding up, not slowing down. Be excited by that, not afraid. 4. Most importantly, be a part of shaping a positive future. Be the future you want to see.
I want to see peace, love, prosperity, and limit suffering. I hope you do too and will create and spread your own peace, love, and acceptance to others. Real value in the future is not how many material goods you can accumulate and brag about, real value is how much the people that know you, truly love you and find value in your existence. It really is how the Beatles say, in The End ‘The Love you Take is Equal to the Love you Make.’
