In Case of Emergency – Read This!

Great things happen with the accumulation of small positive habits. Body, mind, relationships, and work can all be improved upon by consistently implementing tools that you discover and incorporate into your daily routine. You could be really good at it, you could be the best, but everyone will eventually step out on their habits. It will be demoralizing. You were at it for only a day, or for two weeks, or maybe you made it flawlessly for 6 months and then some outside event happened; injury, severe weather, or caring for a loved one that caused you to upend your daily 5:30 wake up time, run, blogging, eating healthy, workout, or sobriety. So what are you going to do? You know you want to get back at it but you’re having this realization at noon and you’ve already missed the start of the day or you’ve had a drink at lunch with a friend. I suggest you don’t start with your routine and instead find something positive or useful to do with your time to build the momentum to start the day right tomorrow. This topic is fresh in my mind because I just lost my routine and I couldn’t do my days like I had been but I knew I wanted back at it. So I started by organizing and cleaning. Maintaining and improving your space gives you a sense of order and agency over your life similar to your routine. It helped me and so I share it with you.

Two main takeaways here: 1) Know that your routine will eventually be interrupted and know that it happens to everyone and that you can get back on your path. Don’t be so hard on yourself and instead focus your energy on getting back at it. 2) Just get started with something that gives you agency over your life and build on it until you can get back into your routine. Once you’ve accomplished one thing, move to the next good thing and don’t stop moving until it’s time for early bedtime, set that alarm for early the next morning and get back into your routine.

Need more examples? Make your bed, shave, shower, brush your teeth, drink a quart of water, do your laundry, do your dishes, organize a closet, find unwanted items around your house and donate them, eat rice, beans, and vegetables, drink another quart of water, brush your teeth again, read a book, journal, now go to sleep and be ready for your 5:30 run or however you start your perfect day. Whatever you do, stop looking at screens unless it’s for work.

Create agency, peace, and love, and share it with others.
