You’re seeking Agency, not Happiness

We’ve learned enough to know that things and relationships and experiences aren’t enough to make us ‘happy’. The achievement of the above will likely bring you temporary happiness, but when the new car smell wears off, the boyfriend becomes the ball and chain, or you’ve flown home from Fiji, the glitter wears off. But why? I really thought I wanted those things. You did, and you’ll come up with more of them you want, but once achieved, they don’t bring lasting satisfaction. We can try to trick ourselves into wanting what we have but there is a limit to the lasting satisfaction.

I would suggest that what we really desire is agency. The confidence that we can get these things when pressed to. The autonomy to write our own ticket. Short of agency, the best reason I’ve heard to be wealthy is in order to be in control of your own time. To not be reporting for work each day, working and getting paid at the whim of your employer. You need to take charge, to apply for better jobs, or better yet, create your own job by building or buying a company. I believe true agency and happiness can be found there.
