Facebook has been with us for roughly 15 years and can be compared to the development of a teenage human. What have we seen so far from Social Media (SM)? We see a lot of gloating and curating of the perfect lives for who? For the people you have known throughout your life. Those posters want everyone to know that they are doing well and they want that affirmation, and it’s quite childish. SM is bemoaned for this and for all the hate, anger, and attacks that it hosts. I’ve entirely abandoned it too for these reasons. But when I think about it more deeply, the SM isn’t to blame, the users of SM are to blame. We have posted like spoiled children and spiteful teens. But what if it could be better?
I’m not on social media, but I leave room for the hope of a future where this interconnected conscious we now have can be much more productive. Like self affirmations, maybe we can post with kindness and empathy and lift each other up instead of saying ‘hey, look at me and my new expensive bullshit I bought or trip I went on’. That is the old world that should be left behind. No one of substance or character should care what you drive or how big your house is. And when you do good, great, but don’t post about that either. Honestly I don’t know what is left to post about that isn’t potentially bullshit.
Maybe just “I am thankful for this day, and I hope everyone has a nice day”.
Give it a try in the comment section below, what social media post would be universally good and not anxiety-inducing for the entire world to consume at once?
